WANT TO BUILD YOUR MX DREAM TRACK?

Are you the kid who doodles and draws doubles and triples in your notebook while your history teacher is going over the League of Nations?

Are you the dad that rents a D3G each spring to spruce up the track in the back yard?

Maybe you’re the mom who puts green and brown frosting on birthday cakes to resemble an mx track.

Do you dream of having your own MTF?

Well here is you chance!

Cohocton Motocross will be putting in an all new SX style practice track and you get to design, build and name it along with having exclusive riding privileges for 1 year!

What size area do we get to work with?
Example:  250' x 500'?

good question. I still have to get down to the track tomorrow and get exact measurments.

it is about 250 on the pond side and 500 along the road so good guess.

this is going to be fun.

Is the terrain level or is there natural elevations that you want to incorporate into the design.Do you want a tight SX or more of a open design. The older guys like the old school and younger riders SX, but the young uns will ride on whatever you tell them to,unlike the old guys. Where does the sun set in relation to the track and where if any are the grandstands going to be. All of this plays into a well thought out track. If you build a super technical track your rider numbers will probably be lower than one that allows passing with some sweeper type corners and jumps that are set up as nice doubles with a expert only type tripple thrown in. We regularly hit up 2 SX tracks that are completly different and one draws considerbly more numbers than the other one. The main reason as near as i can figure out is track layout . Even though the one with the larger numbers has the worst lighting and placement of light standards. There are some other small things that play into the equation.

How wild can we get?  I have a fantastic idea for the first portion of the track but I need to know what are our boundaries as far as the type of machines you have to build it and is it going to be built for bikes or quads or both?  Will it have lighting similar to Miles Mountain for night racing?

i will get a better desciption for everyone. and a photo of the lot. this track will be an additional practicve track that we are planning on running during the weeks. we bought lights last year but they are not going on this track. we are going to change the bottom of the big track later on and add lights like miles... not sure about quads yet. dave and i talked about yet another track for quads. so design it for primarily mx but it needs to practical.  we are looking for creative thinkers and someone who wants to put some effort into a fun project. thats what you need to show. when we get to the actual building process. together we'll do what works best.

i'm pumped that you guys have some good ideas. i can't wait now.

I agree with bitteroldman that you'll probably get more people to ride it if it's not too technical. You can have fun obstacles that are technical enough for the experts, but still have them be safe for less experienced riders to roll, or double vs. triple, or  take an alternate line. There are llots of options (like a table to single that you need to be an advanced rider to clear but a novice can at least jump "onto" the table portion) that can make it fun for all. I think, but  am not sure, that Miles ended up making their SX track more novice friendly in 2007 by filling in some of the doubles, etc. It made the track safer and I know some of the older guys started riding SX after the changes, because of the changes. Maybe someone from Miles can chime in with some input on that?

It sounds like Cohocton is planning some great improvements this year. That's awesome!

We did fill in many of the doubles to make them more rider friendly for everyone but the distance didn't change.  The young riders can roll the jumps without getting wipe lash.  We joke about it now and call it 'tablecross' but it was for the best.  The supercross series had the best turn outs last year due to the changes.

I’ve added dimensions and some ground level photos to the contest page. Hopefully this will help in your design process.  You're welcome to stop at the track and take a look too if you live near by.

I've always tried to build things that are forgiving... except 1 thing that mike might thing was a little rough on the landing. I gave him good forewarning though.  but him and i both know that anything over 50 feet is a tough landing without a bike.

A separate quad track would be nice, it makes the day go alot faster. If you guys are thinking of doing  the quad track I know quite a few riders that would have some good ideas for one.
